WELCOME TO OUR HOME
This is the Carmelite Monastery Melbourne and we are Contemplative Nuns living the Rule of Life which inspired St Teresa of Avila in her Reform for the Discalced Carmelites.
As a Carmelite contemplative, monastic community, we belong to the great family of Carmel, an ancient Order devoted to the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mt Carmel. The contemplative life is a channel of God’s compassion, love and peace in our world and it reminds us of our need for God’s all-powerful help and wisdom as He leads us through the daily vicissitudes of life.
In early centuries the Mount of Carmel stood out as a place of beauty and tradition, hallowed by the memory of the Prophet Elijah in the Old Testament, where the presence of God was found in silence and stillness.
Our Monastery today, situated on a hill looking across the city of Melbourne, becomes a living icon giving testimony to the Carmelite life of prayer in imitation of Christ who prayed on the mountain, spending nights in prayer to His Father.
This has been the home of Carmelites since 1929, a sacred place because of those who dedicate their lives to God in contemplative prayer, in the joy of God’s beauty, love and truth.
WORSHIP AND PRAYER
The Monastery Church is open daily for prayer and for the celebration of the Eucharist.
A true oasis of peace and tranquility, our monastery is a place of welcome where all may visit and share the beauty of the church where the Eucharistic sacrifice is offered each day.
Here you will find the shrine of OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL and the AUSTRALIAN SHRINE OF ST THERESE OF LISIEUX.
The gardens too make a peaceful setting where creation speaks of the glory of God and brings calm and stillness to a busy world.
